What to do in an emergency

When we're open...

If your pet has a problem during surgery hours, please telephone the practice immediately and we will ensure that you are offered an appointment on a priority basis. Please make it clear that the matter is not routine and we will do our utmost to attend to you at the earliest opportunity.


When we're closed...

Our out of hours emergency cover is provided by Vets Now in Attercliffe. Please contact them on 0114 2421929.

If you are not sure whether you need to come in for an appointment, or just need some advice, why not try our Video Vets Now service? Available 8am-11pm daily, you can speak to a vet from the comfort of your home.

Symptoms that need an emergency appointment...

  • Breathing difficulties.
  • Pale gums.
  • Blood in faeces and also lethargic.
  • Persistent vomiting with or without diarrhoea.
  • Seizuring/staggering.
  • Profuse bleeding from open wound.
  • Broken bones/not bearing weight on limb
  • Collapse.
  • Allergic reactions
  • Eye injuries
  • Bloated stomach.
  • Road traffic accident.
  • Inability to urinate.
  • Refusal to drink or eat for 24 hours or more.
  • Ingestion of toxin/poison, including chocolate, onions, garlic, raisins, grapes, sultanas, lilies.
